How to install the OzHitch Uni Joint Bushes

Welcome to our step-by-step guide on how to install the OzHitch Uni Joint Bushes. Proper installation and maintenance of these bushes are essential to ensure smooth articulation and long-lasting performance of your OzHitch off-road coupling. Follow this guide for an easy and hassle-free installation process.

OzHitch Universal Joint

What You’ll Need:

Before starting, make sure you have the following tools and materials:

  • OzHitch Uni Joint Bushes (4 small bushes)
  • Grease or lubricant (to ensure smooth movement and reduce friction)
  • Rubber mallet (for precise installation without damage)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for removing old bushes if necessary)
  • Clean cloth or rag (for cleaning the joints before installation)
  • Safety gear (gloves and safety glasses)

Step 1: Prepare the Uni Joint

Before installing the new bushes, it’s important to prepare the uni joint:

  1. Inspect the Uni Joint: Check the condition of the uni joint for any signs of wear or damage. If the joint itself is damaged, it may need to be replaced before installing new bushes.
  2. Clean the Joint: Use a clean cloth to wipe away any dirt, debris, or old grease from the uni joint. This ensures a clean surface for the new bushes and promotes smooth movement.

Step 2: Remove the Old Bushes

If you are replacing old bushes, you’ll need to remove them first:

  1. Use Needle-Nose Pliers: Carefully grip the old bushes with needle-nose pliers and gently pull them out of the uni joint. Take care not to damage the joint during this process.
  2. Clean the Housing: Once the old bushes are removed, clean the inside of the joint’s housing to remove any leftover debris or grease.

Step 3: Install the New Bushes

With the joint prepared, you can now install the OzHitch Uni Joint Bushes:

  1. Apply Grease: Lightly grease the new bushes and the inside of the joint housing. This will make it easier to insert the bushes and reduce friction once they are in place.
  2. Align the Bushes: Position the new bushes over the openings of the uni joint. Make sure they are properly aligned with the holes.
  3. Tap the Bushes into Place: Using a rubber mallet, gently tap the bushes into place. Be careful not to use excessive force, as this could damage the bushes. The bushes should fit snugly into the housing.

Step 4: Lubricate the Bushes

After installing the bushes:

  1. Apply Additional Grease: Once the bushes are securely in place, apply a small amount of grease to the external surfaces to ensure smooth articulation.
  2. Test the Movement: Gently move the uni joint to ensure the bushes are properly installed and that there is no excessive resistance or stiffness.

Step 5: Reassemble the Coupling

With the new bushes installed and lubricated:

  1. Reassemble the Coupling: Reconnect the uni joint to the coupling system.
  2. Final Inspection: Ensure everything is properly aligned and secured. Double-check that the bushes are seated correctly and the joint moves smoothly.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Regular Greasing: Regularly apply grease to the uni joint and bushes to maintain smooth movement and prevent wear.
  • Periodic Inspection: Check the condition of the bushes and the uni joint periodically, especially after heavy off-road use, to ensure they are still in good working condition.
